Kaylyn’s First Communion

December 2, 2007

This morning in church Shar took Kaylyn into worship with her, instead of dropping her at her usual Sunday School class, because they were full up. (I was back in the media suite.)

When it came time for the Eucharist, knowing that Kaylyn was in worship, I made it a point to slip into the sanctuary to see about her taking communion for the first time. When I found them, Kaylyn had just finished filling out a nice puzzle on the back of the bulletin. We asked her about going up front. Although usually game to try new things, she wasn’t interested at first. Shar explained the process of receiving a piece of the bread and dipping into the cup (the technical term is Intinction). She still seemed hesitant until I told her it was yummy. Then she was all over it.

While waiting I explained to her that the bread symbolized Jesus’ body, and the cup his spilled blood for our sins, and that by taking communion we were remembering Jesus’ death on the cross.

We went up front at the appointed time and, after me, she received the bread and dipped it in the cup. She stood there a moment and munched on it and said, “Mmm. Yummy.”

When we got back to our seats I asked her if she liked it and she said, “Yes.” Then she said with a smile on her face, “Yeww. We just ate Jesus’ blood!”
